Biography

Dr. Deryk G. Jones is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, renowned for his expertise in biologic reconstructive and cartilage restoration in the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, and elbow. He was the Head of Sports Medicine and Cartilage Restoration at the Ochsner Andrews Sports Medicine Institute from 2004-2025, an institute that he created and developed. Dr. Jones has been at the forefront of innovative treatments, including FDA trials utilizing stem cells, articular chondrocytes, osteochondral allografts, knee osteotomies, minimally invasive joint arthroplasty, meniscal transplantation, umbilical and biologic stem cell injections.

Dr. Jones majored in biology and philosophy at Emory University and obtained a Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University School of Medicine. General surgical internship and residency training were in Boston, MA, at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Program respectively. He was chief resident in Orthopedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then performed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He is board-certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery.

He is key opinion leader in meniscal transplantation, autologous chondrocyte implantation, minimally invasive joint replacement, osteotomy and arthroscopic-assisted ligament reconstruction and repair; he is deeply involved in cutting-edge research and advancements in the field. His affiliations include the American Orthopedic Sports Medicine Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and the International Cartilage Repair Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Orthopedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Jones is a full professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Queensland, Australia (Ochsner Clinical School).

Dr. Jones is now the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Service Line Chair for Sutter Health. He will help Sutter Health’s mission to create nationally recognized orthopedic and sports medicine advanced clinical programs. The goal is the development of Advanced Complexes devoted to providing excellent, high-level care to the northern California region in all subspecialties within orthopedics and sports medicine. Clinically he will continue to help individuals with complex chondral injuries providing biologic solutions to these conditions. He is seeing patients in the Castro Valley region as part of the East Bay Medical Group.
